Ricochet, by Julie Gonzalez, describes the aftermath of an evening gone wrong when the main character, Connor, spends time with a boy he always new was bad news. This is one example that shows it is good to follow one’s instincts. Connor doesn’t, however, and instead hangs out with his friends and this troublemaker, a boy named Will. The results of the violent, tragic evening they spend together haunts Connor and will haunt you as well.

I just finished reading Surrender by Sonya Hartnett. It is a beautifully written, lyrical book, but it is so dark and slightly disturbing. This is one of those books that is weird and creepy, yet beautiful and touching at the same time. I love those. This story (without giving away the twist ending) describes the way a young boy, Anwar, copes with living with two abusive parents in a town that has outcast them. Yet the town itself is going crazy due to attacks by an arsonist who terrorizes people by setting random blazes. The only stability that Anwar finds in this situation is through a mysterious friend who is at once a relief from the madness as well as the cause of it. This is definitely A fantastic book!
