A book I read recently was Patriot Games by Tom Clancy. A history teacher named Jack Ryan went to England on a business trip, and a vacation for his wife. But he never expected to come back from England as a hero after a nearly fatal encounter from his terrorist Irish cousins. But not before nearly getting smashed by a bus. Even so, he got more attention than he ever wanted in the first place, including that of a vengeful Irishman who had been captured. This I recommend for anyone interested in military, CIA spy stuff, some terrorist stuff, or just plain adventure. A former Marine, Jack becomes a knight, but he complains occasionally, like: “Man, I can’t be a knight. I don’t even have a horse, or a suit of armor, or even a sword… Well I have my Marine sword, but it’s all the way back home.” He complains sometimes, especially when he has to get on a plain, because he had a helicopter crash that almost killed him. It is funny because plain anxiety keeps him awake on a plane while he’s thinking, “When is this ride gonna be over? I wanna get off soon!”
But when he arrives home, the thrill of the hunt begins: starting from England. The Irish terrorist Sean Miller escapes from a prison transfer and starts his refresher course. His first attempt at Jack’s life had its due effect, but failed due to school security guards who captured an anonymous stranger who intended to kill the guy. Jack was devastated to find his family in critical condition, and he almost killed one of the terrorist members in a hospital, in front of the media! Seeing that the terrorist won’t stop evading the authorities, Jack goes to work full time at the CIA, helping to stop other terrorist groups as an analyst. Though he would prefer teaching history. Then there is a bloody war right on his backyard. The rest I leave to you.
